Choosing a place to drop a resume off may seem like one of the easiest decisions you’ll make. All you have to do is scan the mall for hiring signs and hand the resume to the cashier.
Well, you might want to give it a bit more thought, not only is your job something you should like or be good at, but it should also be something you agree with. This may sound a bit odd to you, but if you give it some thought, it will make sense. A vegetarian would obviously not be satisfied with a job at a fast-food restaurant. So how does this apply to you?
Think before taking the first job you see and ask questions. What does this business represent? What are its goals? What does it do? And what’s my part in it all?
Looking at an employer’s reputation is always a good start, both in the community and internationally. See how the business treats its costumers; an employer with a reputation for accusing teenagers of shoplifting may not be the business you want to work for. Also look at how the business treats its employees; both locally and internationally. Find out if the business uses equal wages for their employees, if they support fair trade or if they exploit third world sweat shops.
So before you drop off a resume, know who you will be working for and what they stand for and make sure their goals match up with yours. |
