Halifax teen wins 'Teens Now Talk' writing award

Grade 9 student, Lillie Stanley is the first winner in an ongoing contest call Write Your World, sponsored by Atlantic Canada's new teen magazine, Teens Now Talk (TNT).  Her short story, Today I Killed a Man, will be featured in the magazine's first issue, which will hit newsstands in May.  Today Stanley will receive a cash reward, along with recognition from her peers during a rally at Highland Park Junior High.

Stanley's story focuses on the agony of fighting for one's country, as seen through the eyes of a young soldier:  "He was the enemy, I told myself, and he deserved to die. But, in the eyes of God wasn't he human, just like me?"

The story was chosen as the winner by a panel of 25 teens who are currently writing for the TNT magazine and website.  The contest encouraged entrants to write about issues that face teens in today's society. "The creative short stories, poetry, art work and photography submissions that we received from teens provide a platform for all of their views to be heard.  We hope TNT will accurately reflect all of their thoughts, views and ideas and provide them a venue, both in print and online, to have a voice," said Jessica Bowden, CEO of Teens Now Talk Publishing Inc.

TNT gives Atlantic Canadian teens the opportunity to Be Seen, Be Heard and Be the Voice of the Future.  Through the magazine and the website, teens are able to express themselves and be recognized for their talents.  "It's all about bragging rights," said Bowden.  "The teens will have a forum to show their skills and get exposure for doing the right thing."
