Sports - Take a Ride On My Board Print E-mail
skateboardersIt was last week around 4:30 pm, I was on my way home from a crazy day of shopping for clothing to wear to work. While I was walking down Bell Road, I saw three teens walking away from the "bowl" at the Halifax Commons, and each was carrying his skateboard in his right hand, talking away. In front of them were three well-dressed business men who were also talking, but instead of skateboards, they carried briefcases. I started to wonder which group had the most fun that day while the image of switching the groups' skateboards and briefcases had me in stitches laughing...

Skateboarder with cellphoneThen I did it… I walk over to the bowl, I put down my shopping bags and sat on the outer ledge of the bowl and observed some of my friends preforming awe-inspiring maneuvers. The air became full of energy from the sounds of spectators cheering and clapping. Yet the whispering words "that's awesome" somehow broke through the noise and caught my attention. These words belonged to the young girl sitting beside me who was possibly waiting for her turn to preform as she sat with her legs crossed and eyes focus on every move. All I could do was give props and equate their dedication, skill and training in skateboarding as powerful tools which will enhances them in there future careers. My observations below are in no way proven but after I looked outside the box, they made a lot of sense to me.

  • It takes coordination to apply balance and grace to master the sport of skateboarding.
  • The fitness benefits are exercise, releasing emotions & stress.
  • To perform tricks takes strategic planning, problem solving and some application of mathematical skills.
  • Since teens use a skateboard for recreation and transportation there is less toxic fumes going in the air.
  • Groups dynamics, develops communication & competitive skills.broken skateboards.

I learned a lesson that day from my future teen leaders which was… Always try to have fun in whatever it is you are doing, then it will never seems like work.
