WHAT
Amistad America Inc.’s Freedom Schooner Amistad, is a re-creation of the 19th century schooner, La Amistad. The historic replica will visit Halifax from July 30th until August 7th. (www.amistadamerica.org) The Amistad Incident of 1839, made famous in the movie ‘Amistad’ by director Steven Spielberg, is one of the first human-rights cases in United States history to be argued in the American court system on behalf of Africans.

While in Halifax, a series of youth discussion forums on racial diversity and leadership, combined with sailing excursions is being offered to a limited number of youth. The sessions will promote improved relationships between races and cultures and offer youth a chance to talk about freedom, justice, perseverance, cooperation and leadership arising from the historic Amistad Incident of 1839.
